Bee Happy

Our Bee Happy project is funded by the People's Postcode Lottery.

We wanted to create a space on site that we can re wild and ‘leave for nature’, grow wildflowers and house some bees. Last year (2020), we worked hard preparing the site, sowing the wildflower seeds that were advised by the Wildlife Trust.

The area is quite shaded as it’s an opening between some big (ancient) trees, so rather than a wildflower meadow, we have used a woodland glade mix which we have seen some lovely colour from this year, we've also focused on trying to increase the native flora identified in our species survey - something we'll use to record our progress year on year! We hope this will help us attract more pollinators to site, such as bees, butterflies, moths and hoverflies.

The bees arrived in early summer and are now settled on site. We hope to start running some beekeeping sessions on site with Phil our beekeeper, allowing our volunteers to start managing these wonderful creatures. We even have our very own hand painted sign thanks to our super-talented volunteer, Emily!
